Asian-Americans who feel offended by the Oscars joke can start off by addressing the racism in their own communities. You know what I mean. If you arrived in the country as a descendent of entrepreneurial hopefuls, you’re not in the same boat as black people who have had a different kind of struggle in America for centuries. Stop trying to appeal to White Power. Address your concerns to Asians who are in power; they are more likely to listen and respond to you than white people who already only see you as a joke or an exotic other. Work on building and refining your own forms of media, as opposed to desperately trying to join who you view as oppressive force.

One possible reason is also that not many Asian-Americans go deep into the entertainment industry in America, knowing that their chances of survival will be extremely slim and unusually difficult. They are constantly barred on the way up… so very few make it to the level where they could possibly even be considered for SNL. That, and the idea that Asians, in America, are always portrayed as sidekicks and villains, and never main characters. The American audience subconsciously struggles to accept Asian faces as deserving of the spotlight (a.k.a. can’t give them their full attention).
SNL wouldn’t take the gamble of lowering their ratings like that- not unless they were trying to make some socio-political statement with such a move. What is Cho trying to accomplish by asking this question- is she trying to “bring awareness to the situation”…??? Our current capitalist system values maximizing $$$ income over social equality (DUH, no brainer), and the white supremacists running the media have no interest in relinquishing any of the power they hold over the masses. And of course not; why would they? If you whine and complain enough about the lack of decent roles or scripts for AsAms, will they one day finally realize their way of doing things is “not very nice”? No! This is all intentional! Asians and AsAms asking rhetorical questions is a case of wasting time, beating around the bush.
If you’re asking for inclusion- for the spot you think you deserve in the world of the [supposed] ruling class- then you support capitalist conduct and white supremacy- you just resent that you’re not getting a big enough slice of the pie. Recognize the ways in which grandeur and [modern] luxuries have been built upon the long-term suffering of the masses. Support Black Power! Forget Hollywood, the Grammys, the Oscars, the white-dominant culture of Beverly Hills and Manhattan! Stop giving them any of your money, time, and/or attention! All of those things are energy, in different forms, and the more you give them your energy, the more you feed them, and the more they grow. Start tending your own gardens NOW!
Support media and production companies that are directed and managed by POC- even if they seem “amateur,” “low-brow,” or “aren’t very good.” They’ll soon get better if you- and others- begin investing your attention/ support. Or, if you’re so dissatisfied with what already exists out there, take your anger and frustration, and focus… Channel that energy into starting your own! Open a gallery. Make that film. Create a company. (Giant Robot doesn’t even have a web forum anymore.)
Build your own castles; stop asking to play in theirs.
This is not a call to erect walls and build boundaries between us as human beings. This is an attempt to diversify- and thereby strengthen- our national cultural background, via the specific tactic of fueling the growth and development of non-white media outlets.
I see a lot of Asian-American creative talent struggling for relevance, squandering their energy by running into the same walls over and over. It’s almost as if that IS the AsAm cultural disposition- the petulant other child-thing politely repeating, “But what about me?” And that makes me sad. There’s so many of you, of us! I want to say to them- “Do something then! Do something about it!! Work with each other!!! STOP CARING WHAT THE WHITE PEOPLES THINK!!! Just! do! SOMETHING!!!”
